A Slab Leak Can Cause Extensive Damage

Slab leaks are particularly troublesome because they often go undetected. If you have an inkling that something just isn’t quite right, it’s best to call a licensed plumber right away. We do not recommend procrastinating, not ever, but especially nor if you have a leak. Even a small leak is capable of producing extensive damage to your home, resulting in costly repairs, not to mention you could be out of your home for some time. This is why catching a leak early on is imperative!

Perform The Following Checks

Before you tear into your walls with a sledgehammer in an attempt to find the source, try deciphering with these common signs that you can either see, feel, or smell.

Flooring

Inspect the flooring in your home for damp and/or warped areas. If you have carpeting, you can spot leaks by feeling it with either your hands or feet. Over time, these puddles will accumulate more and more water, which is why promptness is crucial.

Puddles will usually crop up in areas where your plumbing is located, such as your bathroomkitchen, and laundry room.

In addition to water accumulation, warm floors are another indication that you may have a slab leak. This is because there is a hot water leak. If you notice that some parts of your flooring are hot while others aren’t, call a professional plumber as soon as possible.

A third sign to look for is cracked floors. This is the most severe symptom. If you have cracks in your floor, and water is seeping through, call a professional right away.

Mold & Mildew

When water accumulation goes unnoticed, it makes may for mold growth. Drywall absorbs water quickly, so when you have damp drywall, it’s likely that you also have mold or mildew. Not only are mold and mildew an eyesore, they’re also damaging to one’s health.

Outdoor Puddles

Walk around your house to inspect for puddles. If you do find puddles, make sure that they are not coming from a water hose or from any other source that isn’t threatening.

High Water & Heating Bills

If you notice a sudden spike in your water bills, yet you haven’t changed any of your routines, it’s possible that you have a slab leak. Further, if you notice a spike in your heating bill as well, it could be because your heating system is having to work harder to heat the leaking water coming into your home.

Listen for Sounds

Another way to determine if there is a leak is by listening for it. Put your ear to the foundation to see if you can hear running water. If you’re having trouble, try turning off your plumbing appliances.
